Age Discrimination "An Employer's Timebomb!"
On 1 October 2006, legislation outlawing age-based discrimination will be implemented for the first time in the UK. The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 are being hailed by many as the most significant upheaval in employment law for 30 years. The new laws will prohibit discrimination on the grounds of age in employment and vocational training, unless the discriminatory aspect can be shown to be objectively justified.

Prescribed clauses leases
From 19th June 2006 all Leases granted out of Registered Land for 7 years or more must be Prescribed Clauses Leases (PCLs). There are few exceptions and the Land Registry's objective is that leases for 3 years or more become registrable.

Get off my land! Dealing with squatters' rights
Many people will be familiar with the rule in property law that if you allow a third party to remain on your land without permission for twelve years or more then that third party may become entitled to claim a possessory title. This is because under the Limitation Act 1980 (and previous acts) any claim for possession must normally be brought within twelve years of the claim arising. The third party has to occupy the land exclusively and in such a manner as is adverse to the interests of the true owner. It was thought in addition the third party had to have an intention to adversely occupy the land (for example it should not be prepared to pay rent or a licence fee for the continued occupation).

New Construction Industry Scheme [CIS] - are your sub-contractors really employees?
Her Majesty's Customs and Revenue ("HMCR") have for some time expressed concerns about the construction industry's "poor record of complying with tax obligations" and the general perception that it was a 'cash in hand' industry. This general concern prompted special deduction schemes culminating in the current construction industry scheme which was introduced in 1999 ("CIS").

Employers Liability Insurance - New Rules
